Successfull reinstallation of Windows Picture and Fax Viewer Best answer on the web

  • How to install "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer" to print and save http://webapps.rrc.state.tx.us/dpimages/img/100000-99999//PR0000142021_0002.tif?
I have Windows XP, 512 MB, SP1 and I think I have uninstalled or
corrupted WPFV because MPFV does not appear when I open the ".tif" image above.

I can view but can not print or save the image.

  • Hello whistle_britches,

When I click on that link, I get a box that pops up saying, "What should Firefox do with this file?" and gives options whether to open it directly or to save it to somewhere. What exactly happens when you click on that link?
What browser are you using and how is it configured? Firefox allows me to save that image to my desktop, which then allows Irfanview to open and print the image. It works perfectly for me.
(Note: I just tried in Internet Explorer and it also asks me what to do with the file. Do you have your browser configured to automatically open an image or to ask you what to do with a file first? If you have it set to automatically open, you can reset it to ask you what to do with files. Then, you should be able to save the file and open it directly from your desktop or wherever you so choose to save it.)
Would the file in another format work for you? I could convert it to another type of file and upload it for you.
Let me know what you think of these options.

  • Hi whistle_britches,

I would recommend that you install Windows XP Service Pack 2. There is no reason to just have SP1 and that might very well be why the Windows Fax and Picture Viewer is not working for your computer.
If you install SP2 and the install of Windows Fax still will not work, you have a bad install of Windows XP in the first place and Windows Fax and Picture Viewer will not be able to work on your computer.
You have 2 options in this case:

    1. Reinstall Windows XP.
A clean install should allow the install of Windows Fax and Picture to work as it should.
    2. You could use an alternative viewer to view the files you wish to view. There are many available which should suit your needs, and if you let me know that this is what you wish, I could give you a list of them which you could use.

I would recommend that you reinstall Windows XP anyway, however, because if you have such a bad installation that it is causing these problems for you, it will probably cause worse problems for you in the future and it is inevitable that you must reinstall it.
Let me know what you think of these options.

  • keystone-ga,

Well, I had not re-booted as you said I may have to so
I was rather sure that was my problem.

I just re-booted and the result is same.

No Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

    Patience and persistence pays profits,

    John

  • keystrokes,

When I right click on image, you get nothing!

I did download one of your suggestions.

    WB

  • Hi whistle_britches,

Did my suggestion of the alternate program work?

You don't have to right click on the actual image itself, but on the file name.

For instance, when you have the file:
    http://webapps.rrc.state.tx.us/dpimages/img/100000-199999//PR0000142750_0001.tif

you would click on the actual words on this page that make the link. When you right click on those, absolutely nothing happens? A box should pop up. This should have the option to "save target as" or "save link as."
    Let me know what happens.

  • Here is another idea as well.

Apple QuickTime, when installed as a browser plugin, can access the
file, you could install that and access the file that way too.

Another alternative you could use is to download and install:

    Getright
    http://www.getright.com/

start a download using that software and paste the TIFF file address as
the download source and save it to your desktop, then he should be able to open and
    print it out as normal.

Something among all these suggestions should be able to work.

  • keystroke,

I can see the image but I can save or print it.
If I print, it prints blank.

There is no save or save as offered; so I can not save.

The file or whatever ever it is on the internet. Starts with webapp and ends in .tif. I just went to another computer which I think has maybe Windows 98 and It opens, saves, and will print the image.

    Very frustrating.

I think all these programs that you offered are to open a file
and I don't think that they are a file but as it sez a "webapp.....tif"???

    Thanks for all your help,

    WB

  • Hello,

You have posed a very interesting question here however I believe I have an answer for you.
If you want to reinstall the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer software do the following.
Click on Start, Run... and type in:

    regsvr32 /u %windir%system32shimgvw.dll

Once that process has finished do the following

Click on Start, Run... and type in:

    regsvr32 /i %windir%system32shimgvw.dll

This should reinstall Picture and Fax viewer.

    Search terms:
    picture and fax viewer msn
    +
    personal knowledge

Would obtaining other software to print and view the images be an acceptable resolution too? If you need any additional information such as other viewers, let me know and I'll answer that in a clarification.

  • Thank you for a response.

I have previously installed SP2 and it slowed down my computer terribly
    and I uninstalled it.

I plan to buy a new computer this fall or early next year and I don't want
to mess with something that is working.

I just received a .jpg file and it opened in WPFV.

I just went back to the .tif file and WPFV does not open; I can see
the .tif file but can not save or print it; same as before.

Very strange that .jpg will bring up the WPFV and .tif will not.

I don't want the hastle and potential problems of an reinstall
    of Windows XP.

If you have other suggestions based upon what I just told you, let me know.
If I don't hear from you, I consider the matter closed and you have your money.

  • I would also advise you to update immediately to Windows Service Pack 2. There are important updates included in SP2 which you really need to have.
You should also make sure to install any recent Windows updates that you need as well.
If not, at least make sure that you have a good antivirus because you will need it. I recommend Avast, which is free:

  • Thanks, wb. I hope some of my suggestions worked for you.

  • Hi whistle_britches,

I'm not quite sure what you mean by me assisting you. Google Answers Researchers are not allowed to communicate with askers by personal communications such as email and phone.
Here are step-by-step instructions for how to reinstall the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer (and once it is reinstalled, you should easily be able to download and open the tiff file you want):
Press the start button in the bottom left corner of your screen.

A start menu should pop up.

Click on "Run" on that start menu.

When the little box pops up, type this in the white part of the box:

    regsvr32 /u %windir%system32shimgvw.dll

    A process should start.

    When that process has completed,

Click on Start, then Run... and type in:

    regsvr32 /i %windir%system32shimgvw.dll

This should reinstall the Windows Fax and Picture Viewer on your computer.

(You may have to reboot after this for it to work.)

If this doesn't work for some reason, let me know in a clarification and I'll try to help you the best I can. Researchers are only allowed to communicate with askers through the clarification process.
    Cheers,

  • keystroke,

You have gone over and beyond a paid dutiful assistant.

    Thanks for you help.

    WB

  • Hi whistle_britches,

I forgot to add this in as well.

To save that file, simple right click and then click "save target as" in Internet Explorer or "save link as" in Firefox. That should save the file to your desktop or wherever you want and then if you have downloaded one of the programs above, you should be able to open it straight from there and print it.
Let me know if this works.

  • My assumption is that you will assist me in getting
a good install and I will have the ability to open the tif
    file.

If I am correct in my assumption of what you will do.
    then we have a deal.

    Do you agree?

  • Hi whistle_britches,

Here is an alternate viewer that should open .tif files for you:

    Go to this webpage:

    http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=acdsee

and choose version 2.42 of ACDSee.
I believe that is the last free version without nags.
That should open tiff files for you.

    another alternative is Irfan View:

    http://www.irfanview.com/

This allows for TIF editing and printing.

Finally, I have tried to look at this tif file you linked to in your opening question and there is nothing there. Do you have the direct link to it? You may be trying to download something that does not exist on the server.
    Thanks,
    --keystroke-ga

    Can you see this?

Note that it is a webpage??

  • keystroke-ga,

"I'm not sure what you mean by me assisting you. Google Answers
Researchers are not allowed to communicate with askers by personal
communications such as email and phone.", quoting you.

That is what you said. I did the two things at Start and you said it
"should reinstall the Windows Fax and Picture Viewer on your coomputer."

However, it is the same before. WFPV does not appear; when I print preview
    it is a blank page.

So, do you understand now what I meant when I said assist me
because your solution is supposed to solve my problem, but
it did not solve my problem.

I want to pay you when my problem is solved. Do you understand?

    Now, what is next step?
