Comparative study: geoploitical influence Best answer on the web

  • I am interested to get a file (table or excel), to include all
    countries in the world (using ISO code 3166, or world-bank code), and
    to specify by a column the geo-political influence of the country, in
    2005. A classification by those colonisers: UK, France, Spain,
    Portugal, Russia, Dutch, US, German, China, Italy, Arabic colonisers.
    E.g. a) Country: ECU Ecuador; b) Influence: Spain; c) Country AUS
    Australia; d) Influence UK.
    A world-map that describes in different colours the colonies is very
    helpful; not essential.
    Second best, if the geo-political is not found- a column of all
    countries and their language. I am not interested in the specific
    language in 240 countries, but in a cluster of languages- 'leading'
    languages, that are official at least in 2 countries. Any grouping
    that indicates the colonial, religion or ethnic influence is welcomed.
    If no data about a country, to write- not available.

    You're quite right, I accidentally omitted Spanish from my script. This
    has been corrected in the new list below. I have also added Romanian,
    although the official language of Moldova is called Moldovan. The CIA
    World Fact Book does note that Moldovan is essentially the same as
    Romanian. There are now 14 language clusters, as follows.

    I shall rank the languages by the order in which they are listed in the
    CIA World Fact Book. As far as I can tell, these are indeed given by
    decreasing order of prevalence, although the percentages are not always
    specified. In the case of Brazil, for example, the order is Portuguese,
    Spanish, English, French.

    1) After adding Russian language, pls make an effort to add the Spanish; it is missing in all Latin American countries (Bolivia, Chile, Colombia?)! 2)In each country you assorted the language by alpha bet; pls assort for every country by percentage of speakers: eg Brazil instead of English, French, Portuguese- pls write Portoguese, English French (?); (what is more important in Cameroon English or French?) 3) Even I wrote ISO 3166 in my original Q, I use in my data base the Worldbank and ITU codes for countries; I can transfer from FIPS_CNTRY to World Bank; the ISO 3166 two characters is different than FIPS two characters; e.g. Bahamas is BF in FIPS (and BHS as GMI ,World-Bank) while it is BF in ISO. In order to transfer the info to my excel data base, is it possible to provide a file transferring Codes? Pls organise all the results in an excel file, assorted by the WorldBank code; you may use different column for first second third language. 4) Leapinglizard thanks for the French speaking map (as I asked in the Q); is it possible to add a map of countries speaking English (not only as first language); the same for Arabic and Russian speaking maps. NB- Romanian is spoken also in Moldova. Success


  • When there are two different influences- such as in HongKong (UK and China),Tunisia (Arab and French), Ecuador (Spain and US) please specify first and second influence, by a different column. The first influence should be the linguistic one, as the language is more meaningful than the less identified political influence. To clarify: HK- China first, as Chinese is the official language, and UK second; Tunisia- Arabic first and French second; Ecuador- Spain, as the Spanish is the official language, US second. A separate comments column is also welcomed, for notes. I may prefer the title "sociolinguistic influence", in the sense of what is the ruling language and by which "mother culture" it is influenced. When it is still a colony, pls write: ASM (Samoa)- USA, PTC (Pitcairn)- UK, WLF(Wallis and Futuna)- France. A map of all French speaking (first or second language (to include Tunisia, Burundi) is most welcomed.

    but I have been successful in identifying languages based on your
    criteria. I did this by downloading the 2005 version of the CIA World
    Fact Book and processing its contents with a number of scripts I wrote
    specially for this purpose.

    Analysis of the Languages field in each country's entry shows that
    there are 12 languages that are the official language of more than one
    country. These are the following.

    I processed the Languages fields again to determine which of these
    languages are spoken in each country. Below is a list showing the results

    which I could label these countries. I did, however, locate two attractive
    maps showing all members of The Francophonie, which is the official
    association of French-speaking and strongly French-influenced countries.

    It sounds like a very interesting project. However, I am not sure, how would you measure "geopolitical influence"?
    For example, one of the countries you gave is Ecuador. While Spain certainly has an influence there (and was the imperial power), I believe that the influence of the United States in Latin America is today much more important, geopolitically. Would you perhaps mean "sociolinguistic influence" (in the sense of what is the ruling language and by which "mother culture" it is influenced)?
